iPhone SDK Released with Impressive API and Tools

I watched the announcement on Apple's iPhone SDK today and was amazed at the power that developers now have.  I couldn't wait to get started trying things out until I found out that the iPhone simulator and IDE are only available on the Mac platform.

I highly recommend watching the full announcement on Apple's Developer Connection page.

Here is a quick summary of the main API features and tools being released:

API Features

  1. Accelerometer
  2. Touch
  3. Multitouch
  4. Camera

Tools

  1. iPhone simulator
Simulator that runs on your Mac
  2. Instruments
Live performance analysis statistics to easily find out where your applications can be optimized
  3. Interface Builder
Drag and drop iPhone GUI elements into your project

The next software release of the iPhone will also support Microsoft Exchange, which I depend on everyday.  I'm almost convinced it’s time for me to pick up an iPhone and a Mac to start developing for it.

Check out the Apple iPhone Developer Center for more details.
